A. Tropical Cyclone Warning:

(Tropical cyclone signal no. 8 is expected within these 4 hours)

Meaning:

Strong wind is expected or blowing in the Victoria harbour, with a sustained speed of 41-62 km/h, and gusts which may exceed 110 km/h.

Important Note:

When the Signal No. 3 is hoisted, secure all loose objects, particularly on balconies and roof tops. Secure hoardings, scaffoldings and temporary structures. Winds are normally expected to become generally strong in the harbour areas abour 12 hours after this signal is hoisted
- Simply knowing what signal is displayed is not enough. You should listen to radio or television broadcasts of weather bulletins and other announcements related to the tropical cyclone.
- Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals are to warn the public of the threat of WINDS associated with a tropical cyclone.
- Due to local topographical conditions, winds at your locality may be substantially different from those in the harbour areas.
- The weather in Hong Kong cannout be simply inferred from the signal displayed. It depends on many other factors such as the size, intensity and distance of the tropical cyclone as well as the characteristics of netghbouring weather systems.

Strength: Severe Tropical Storm
Position: 21.9°N  115.0°E   (100km, ESE of Hong Kong Observatory)
Max wind speed: About 111 km/h ( Storm Force 11 )
Central Pressure: About 976 hPa
Movement: NW'ly at about 16 km/h
Forecast: Sam continued its northwesterly track, getting closer Hong Kong and Macau. Hong Kong Observatory hoisted Strong Wind Signal Number 3 at 2:30am. In addition, according to the past track, it is possible to enter 50 - 100 km of Hong Kong. By that time, Hong Kong will extremely possible to be affected by the gale or storm force wind of the center of Sam. Therefore, the possibility of Gale or Storm Signal Number 8 is 100% and Increasing Gale or Storm Signal Number 9 is 50%. Due to Sam is located very near to Hong Kong, a very little change of the track of Sam will bring us very big change of weather. Please pay full attention of the track and direction change of Sam.
